Playa Giron

Playa Giron is a beach at the south Cuban coast to the west of Bahía de Cochinos bay. It is located 150km/93mi from Havana. Here one can explore steep coral walls, tunnels, several sunken vessels and cliffs that attract the most. Coral walls are decorated with sponges, gorgonarias and black corals. On the reef it is possible to find huge coral sculptures of various colors. The Juroco ship was deliberately sunken here to form an artificial reef. Underwater caves of Playa Giron are very beautiful and not worse than famous Mexican ones.

What to see: Coral sculptures, barracudas, snappers, groupers, rockfish, various tiny fish etc. November is the best time for observing whale sharks.

Season for diving: Diving is possible all year round, although there is a risk of hurricanes in October, while rainy season (from June to October) can influence the descending as well. The average water temperature in December is 22C/71F and in July – 29C/84F.
