Laguna Pepe / Dominican Republic

Laguna Pepe cave in Punta Cana area is a unique place. On the shore it is possible to notice a small puddle with a blurry water of green hue that is an entrance to the cave. On overcoming first half-meter the diver will get into the layer of absolutely transparent water, although one should be careful enough not to rise the clay from the bottom by unfortunate movement of the fins. This cave is known for absence of stalactites, but on the walls there are traits of extinct plants and animals. The walls of soft limestone are cut with a river and the dive runs through the underwater channel. Then divers return to the exit from the opposite side. Near the exit it becomes clear why the cave has received the name of green one. The divers become like a part of a surrounding huge emerald. Suddenly an optical phenomenon “halocline” occurs, the effect of which disappears with a slight ascending.
